The 31st January 2025 self-assessment tax deadline has now passed, but there’s no better time to get organised for the rest of the year. By preparing early, you’ll reduce stress, minimise the risk of costly mistakes, and make the most of available allowances and tax reliefs.
Whether you're a self-employed individual, company director, or property investor, staying ahead of your tax obligations can bring both peace of mind and financial efficiency.
Stay Ahead of the Curve

Early tax planning can make all the difference to your finances. Here’s why:
✔️ Avoid last-minute stress – Rushing to file at the last moment can lead to costly errors.
✔️ Prevent penalties – Missing deadlines can result in fines and interest charges from HMRC.
✔️ Maximise your allowances – Early preparation gives you the opportunity to use tax reliefs and deductions effectively.
✔️ More time to resolve issues – If complications arise, you’ll have the time to address them without delaying your filings.
Why Early Preparation Matters

To help you stay organised, here are the most important tax dates broken down by taxpayer type.
Self-Assessment Taxpayers
These are crucial dates if you're self-employed, a landlord, or a high earner who files a self-assessment tax return:
31 July 2025 – Second payment on account for the 2024/25 tax year (if applicable).
31 January 2025 – Deadline for online self-assessment filing and payment for the 2023/24 tax year.
5 April 2025 – End of the 2024/25 tax year.
6 April 2025 – Start of the 2025/26 tax year.
Corporation Tax Deadlines
For limited companies, corporation tax deadlines are tied to your company’s financial year:
9 months and 1 day after your company’s year-end – Corporation tax payment is due.
Example: If your financial year ends on 31 March 2025, your corporation tax payment must be made by 1 January 2026.
PAYE and National Insurance Contributions (NIC)
Employers are required to submit PAYE and NIC payments on a regular basis:
19th of each month (or 22nd if paying electronically) – Monthly PAYE and NIC payments are due.
VAT Returns
VAT-registered businesses must submit returns based on their accounting period:
Quarterly deadlines – VAT returns are due one month and seven days after the end of each VAT quarter.
Tip: Check your staggered accounting periods for exact dates.
Capital Gains Tax (CGT)
Selling UK property or assets? If you owe CGT, deadlines for reporting and payment are as follows:
60 days after completion of a property sale – You must report and pay CGT within 60 days of the sale completion date if applicable.
