Life has a habit of changing when we least expect it. A divorce or separation, losing a loved one, inheriting property, selling the family home, starting a business or retiring are all significant milestones—and while they bring enough emotion on their own, many people don't realise they can also bring unexpected tax implications. Tax rarely changes because people planned for it; it changes because life did.
This year alone, we've supported clients through a huge range of life events. Every situation is unique, but here are just a few examples that show the breadth of the work we do:
💙 A recently widowed client who had inherited their spouse's estate and suddenly found themselves responsible for probate, Inheritance Tax and understanding what came next. We guided them through the process, liaised with the necessary professionals and gave them one less thing to worry about during an incredibly difficult time.
🏡 A separating couple who needed to understand the Capital Gains Tax implications of transferring and selling property as part of their settlement. By advising early, we helped them make informed decisions and avoid unexpected tax consequences.
📈 A business owner preparing for retirement who wanted to sell their company but wasn't sure of the tax implications. We worked through the available reliefs and planning opportunities, helping them approach retirement with greater confidence.
👨👩👧 A family who had inherited a property but couldn't agree whether to keep it, rent it out or sell it. We explained the tax implications of each option, allowing them to make a decision that worked for both the family and their finances.
🌱 A new business owner who had turned a passion into a successful business but was feeling overwhelmed by registrations, tax obligations and record keeping. We helped them understand what was required and gave them the confidence to focus on growing their business.
These stories may be different, but they all have one thing in common: no one expected tax to become part of the conversation. At The Tax Faculty, we know that behind every tax question is a person, a family or a business navigating that particular change and life upheaval. Our role is to provide clear, practical advice that helps you understand your options and move forward with confidence allowing you to peel off at least one layer of stress from what is often an extremely stressful or emotive situation.
This summer, if life has taken an unexpected turn and you're wondering what it means for your tax or finances, don't face it alone. Whatever your situation, there's every chance we've helped someone through something similar before—and we're here to help you find the right way forward.
