Summer Tax Series: Less Stress, More Sunshine – Week 3: Tax Myth-Busters – Separating Fact from Fiction
We've all heard tax advice that starts with "My mate said..." or "I read on Facebook..." But when it comes to tax, myths can be expensive. In this week's Summer Tax Series, we're busting some of the most common misconceptions we hear and explaining why good tax advice is based on facts—not folklore.

One of the biggest challenges we see isn't complicated tax legislation—it's misinformation. Well-meaning friends, old advice that no longer applies, social media posts taken out of context, things we've "always believed" and even the holy grail of AI can all lead people to make decisions that aren't right for their circumstances. Tax simply isn't one-size-fits-all, and what was correct for one person may not be applicable to another.
Here are just a few of the myths we hear time and time again:
❌ "I don't have to pay tax if it's cash."
How you're paid doesn't usually determine whether tax is due.
❌ "Gifts are always tax free."
Some gifts may have tax implications, depending on who they're made to, their value and when they're made.
❌ "Inheritance Tax only affects millionaires."
Many estates won't pay Inheritance Tax, but assuming it could never apply without checking can lead to unexpected surprises.
❌ "HMRC won't notice."
HMRC receives information from a wide range of sources, and it's always better to deal with tax matters proactively than hope they go unnoticed.
❌ "I can just transfer everything to my spouse and that's the end of it."
Transfers between spouses can often be tax-efficient, but they don't necessarily solve every tax issue or remove future tax consequences.
❌ "I only need tax advice when something has gone wrong."
In reality, the best time to seek advice is often before making an important financial decision.
❌ "If I made an honest mistake, there's nothing I can do."
Mistakes happen, and they're often much easier to resolve when dealt with early.
❌ "Tax planning is only for wealthy people."
Good tax planning is about making informed decisions, whatever your circumstances.
At The Tax Faculty, we spend a lot of time helping clients to separate fact from fiction. Our advice is based on current legislation, your individual circumstances and years of practical experience—not hearsay, standard AI responses or social media soundbites. If you're making decisions based on something you've been told in passing, its honestly worth checking whether it's actually true before acting on it.
This summer, if you've ever found yourself saying, "Someone told me...", why not ask an independent tax adviser instead? A quick conversation could save you unnecessary worry, unexpected costs and expensive mistakes. When it comes to tax, facts will always beat folklore.
