There are some questions we hear time and time again at The Tax Faculty—but they're often whispered rather than asked with confidence. By the time many people pick up the phone, they've spent weeks, months or even years worrying about what might happen. They're convinced we'll tell them they've left it too late, made a terrible mistake or should have sought advice sooner. They're terrified of blame and already beaten, anxious or on the defensive.

The reality couldn't be more different.

Our Office Manager often laughs about every visit to the hairdresser when she inevitably apologises for the state of her hair before she's even sat down in the chair. The hairdresser's response? "Please don't be daft—we're just happy you're here. We'll get it sorted." That's exactly how you build trust -and secure yourself a repeat client. We think that's a pretty good analogy for tax advice too. We're certainly not going to spend your appointment telling you that you should have brushed your hair more often—or in our case, that you should have called us six months ago! That doesn't solve anything.

This year alone, we've spoken to clients who have started conversations with comments like: "You're probably going to tell me off." "I've made such a mess of this." "You'll think I'm stupid." "I've left it far too late." The truth is, we've helped people who have missed filing deadlines, discovered errors in old tax returns, inherited complicated estates, received unexpected letters from HMRC and found themselves completely overwhelmed by paperwork. Every situation is different, but our approach is always the same: understand what's happened, explain the options and find the best way forward.

We're not here to apportion blame or make anyone feel bad. That serves no purpose. Our job is to solve problems, provide clear, practical advice and help take the weight off your shoulders. Tax can feel intimidating enough without worrying about being judged by the very people you've come to for help.

So, if there's a question you've been putting off asking, let this summer be the time you ask it.

Chances are you're not the first person to face your situation, and you certainly won't be the last. One conversation could be all it takes to replace uncertainty with reassurance—and a plan.
